Aspects that aren't so great: nice areas to sit outside are quite limited (but if you can participate in a walking group or even get down to Lake Monger, then this helps); air-conditioning on floors 1 and 2 is frequently too hot or cold (they might have fixed this since last year); little or nothing usually formally organised on weekends (although I suspect this is common in most hospitals); ground floor is a bit 'yuck' and tends to be very noisy; staffing levels are problematic at times which can lead to frustration if you happen to be seeking extra support at those times.

I’ve had quite a few hospital admissions to help me recover from depression. After going to about five different mental health services (some public, some private) as an inpatient, I feel really lucky to have had the opportunity to go to The Marian Centre quite early on. I used to dread going into hospital. But my last couple of admissions I’ve been to MC and of course I don’t look forward to it, but it’s such a relief to get there, right from when the reception staff greet you. The nurses and therapists are attentive and kind; I can’t imagine doing their job. I enjoy the meals, healthy options, and even just not having to cook when I’m unwell. It’s always clean, and although levels 1 and 2 are more modern than the ground floor, I don’t think that the ground floor is anything to complain about (especially when there are so many people out there who aren't able to access any treatment). Some places I’ve been to kind of neglect your physical health. At MC you see a GP soon after admission, as well as your psychiatrist. I get that not every psychiatrist will suit every person, but the two that I’ve seen at MC (one was for a second opinion) listened, were respectful, non-judgemental, perceptive, flexible in working out what might help me, and they helped me to make decisions for myself rather than just telling me what to do. And it seems like they’re not just going to give up on me.

I've been here about 10 days and whilst the room is comfortable and reasonably decent, I could've stayed in a hotel if that was all I wanted. With the exception of around 4 nurses who actually spent time with me and talked about how I felt; the remainder of nurses and there are many, confine themselves to a 2 second head count around your door. If you are a bothersome patient who needs medication; again it's the luck of the draw as to whether you get pleasantries or not.

Do yourself a favour and go to Perth Clinic if you can. It's like the difference between backpackers and the Hyatt.

Oh I forgot the clincher for thousands of dollars per week and after not going to the toilet for 10 days; we don't order enemas!!! Go and buy yourselves some dried prunes

Let me move on to to food. I am a vegetarian and my choices are generally very old salad or some mixed bean slop. I've never been unfortunate enought to be in prison but this is what I imagine slop out looks like. In fact it's probably better.

I have seen a consultant for possibly 5 minutes and a registrar for possibly 10 minutes. The only exception to that was a fabulous Dr Bennet who spent an hour with us. I can only describe her as a breath of fresh air.

Lyn Bennett spent 25 minutes interrogating and building a case against me, feeding her suspicion that I was up to something instead of trying to help me changing my child script for ritalin which iv taken for 19 years because I'm an 'adult'. In the end it didn't add up for her and it was all too hard and so she let her personal bias get in the way of me having my tablets anymore. Wouldnt even spend the time (which I paid 385 dollars for) to phone my pediatrician to get some clarity to help me out. When i asked about how I was going to get my tablets of 19 years when they run out because noone will help she answered. 'It's not my problem' absolute waste of my time and money.

After an overdose where I could barely stand I requested a shower chair and was told we didn't have enough so I sat on a filthy floor. Strangely enough after an irate phone call from my daughter, a shower chair suddenly appeared.

I saw dr Bennett on two occasions and found the experience to be a complete waste of time and money. The first appt I came to see her in a very bad way and she would not proscribe me anything, not even a basic ssri because I was not on contraception. She sent me off to see a psych at king eddies for an opinion. Stupidly I went back to see her after this and all she was competent in doing was a sales pitch for some course that was completely unsuited to my issues. This is just a tiny snippet of all the other useless stuff she said and I'll be submitting a formal complaint. When I left her office I got the distinct impression that it is a common occurrence that people leave dissatisfied and she has to bulk bill.

Much improved from a few years ago. Now features a gym; rTMS therapy for patients wishing to have it (less scary than ECT!); greater variety of therapy groups (e.g. music therapy); walking/exercise groups; refurbished 1st and 2nd floors (including nice beds - and they're even adjustable so that you can prop yourself up for reading or watching TV); better signage on the building (easier for visitors to find if driving down Cambridge Street); and nicer lounge areas within the premises. Meals are very good too, if somewhat repetitive.
